With the recent deaths of 3 leaders in cryptocurrency suddenly dying a lot of social media users are demanding answers. Over the years, however, Crypto has had its fair share of questionable deaths among its leaders. Below we go over 8 of the most mysterious deaths in Crypto history to date.
Mysterious Deaths in Crypto: Autumn Radtke
Autumn Radtke was the 28-year-old founder of First Meta who died in 2014. Dubbed by many as the ‘first real victim of crypto.’ Her apparent suicide came at a time of tremendous turmoil in the digital currency market. Radtke was found dead on the roof of a ground-floor trash collection point at the base of her apartment building. Though many believe Radtke was troubled in the weeks prior to her death, the recent string of deaths in crypto has led social media detectives to find connections between her and the most recent passings.
Mysterious Deaths in Crypto: Gerald Cotten
Arguably the most controversial death in Crypto history belongs to Gerald Cotten. According to reports, Cotten died during his honeymoon in Jaipur, India due to complications with Crohn’s disease in 2018. The 30-year-old founder of Quadriga CX was set to lose millions prior to his death. The price of bitcoin had begun to crash dramatically. However, a later investigation discovered that Cotten had created “fake Quadriga accounts, used fake funds, and made real trades, betting on the value of cryptocurrency.” In short, it was another crypto ‘Ponzi Scheme” that was set to blow up in his face. After his death, the $250 million he stole was unable to be recovered by authorities.
His death sparked many rumors of a fake suicide and even spawned a Netflix documentary, ‘Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King’
Mysterious Deaths in Crypto: Matthew Mellon
The same year as Cotten, another Crypto wizard Mathew Mellon died suddenly. The 54-year-old banking billionaire was on his way to a rehab facility in Cancun and apparently died of a heart attack prior to check-in. Though he had faced substance abuse issues for decades those closest to him said that he had been sober and was taking his rehabilitation seriously. Also, those closest to him say he was paranoid that “they were out to get him.” but Who are they and why would they be after him? A $2 million dollar investment that yielded him over $500 million in return is still missing causing his family and friends to wonder.
‘Hundreds of millions of dollars are missing, possibly forever. Matthew always said “they” were out to get him. Perhaps he was right?’
Mircea Popescu
In 2021 Roman bitcoin investor, Mircea Popescu, drowned in Costa Rica leaving behind a $2 billion dollar fortune. Popescu was one of the largest individual holders of bitcoin in the world. Now just like so many before, and after him, his fortune could be lost forever. Anthony Pompliano, founder of Pomp Investments and noted Bitcoin bull, said in a since-deleted tweet that the loss of Popescu’s holdings could benefit other current holders of the crypto.
Nikolai Mushegian

Vyacheslav Taran
The Russian billionaire, Vyacheslav Taran died in a helicopter crash during optimum flying conditions with an experienced pilot. His death comes on the heels of reports that he had made several enemies in Russia due to ‘ripping them off in day-to-day business dealings. Crypto has become very important in Russia due to its attacks on Ukraine. Sanctions by Europe and the US on Russia have devalued the rubel dramatically.
Javier Biosca
Another accused scam artist, Javier Biosca apparently threw himself off the fifth floor of a hotel in Estepona. This of course happened after he was bailed out of prison by an anonymous benefactor. His bail by the way was $1 million Euros.
Biosca ran the largest Cryptocurrency scam in Spanish history. Making off with over 500 million euros and scamming over 750 investors. He died before he could go back to court.
