Ya’Yah Interview: Artist Spotlight

Ya'Yah interview cover

Thrive Indie recently stepped into the Lighthouse Event Center to talk to the up-and-coming model, singer, and rapper Ya’Yah. We discuss her upcoming project, the state of female rap, and her journey thus far.

Ya’Yah on the state of Female Rap

When asked about the state of female rap, Ya’Yah believes that social media is a big reason why there has been so much controversy in that sector of music.

“Everybody beefing.” She states indirectly referencing the Twitter feud between Cardi B and JT. This situation admittedly seemed to stem from fans commenting under a post of JT congratulating Glorilla on Tomorrow 2 as the track became her first song to reach the top 10 on the Billboard charts. Fans felt JT slighted Cardi by not including her in the tweet.

“It be petty sh*t. Because females, we petty… Some of us. So social media really play a big part in why the females are beefing. If they can set that aside and stop letting the fan’s bullshit dictate stuff, female rap can really take over.”

Her journey so far

The journey of Ya'Yah
Ya’Yah

Ya wasn’t always a solo act. She began in a group and that’s when she started to see signs of how the industry truly was.

“When I first started really really rapping I was in a group. When things started moving we had, like a producer, he signed a production deal, and things were moving. That’s when I got a glimpse of how petty this industry really is. People don’t know how to keep business, business, and personal, personal.”
