Baby on Baby: Album Review

Baby on Baby is the first Album by DaBaby (formerly Baby Jesus) since being signed to Interscope In January. The 13 song project is graced by high profile features from Offset, Rich Homie Quan, and Rich The Kid. With a highly anticipated feature from up and comer NC native Stunna 4 Vegas

As I mentioned here, DaBaby is the hottest emerging artist from the south. He was this week’s Fast Break artist on Everday Struggle and one of the only artist from North Carolina that is really putting on for the state. Baby on Baby was released on all platforms on March 1st and of course being a North Carolina native, I broke my rule of only reviewing Indie acts and decided to review the album from the ambitious artist.

Why?

One, because he’s a hot artist and I have been itching to hear what he has cooked up since securing the bag. Two, North Carolina is underrepresented in the industry and that needs to change.

DaBaby has Arrived

If I could describe this project with one word, its Energy. Not as diverse as Blank Blank, but the energy he attacks each song with is contagious. The majority of the project is hyped up however, chock-full of reflective and insightful lyrics that continue to catch me off guard in an industry full of Flex.

Don’t get me wrong DaBaby true to his brand does a lot of flexing on the album and you can’t be mad with him.

The second track on the album, Suge is the first song that grabs my attention. A smooth base heavy thumper that hears him boast about his deal. A consistent theme throughout.

Track four Pony has emerged as one of my personal favorites. A feel good almost celebratory track. “I ain’t had to make a play in so long I forgot how much a pound weighs.” Highlighting some of the changes in his life since making it big.

The first feature is Offset on the track Baby Sitter. A decent feature even if not the most original track on the album. Fast forward to celebrate.

Celebrate is the track that stands out the most. Lyrics with depth, a stellar feature from Rich Homie who the game has been missing. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Best Friend is a leftover from Blank Blank with the addition of Rich The Kid. Admittedly this is a slight improvement from the first incarnation of the track.

This is his statement project. A signal to the industry that he has arrived.

We Recommend

Overall I would’ve liked to hear more songs like Deserve It,  No Tears, and No Love. However, this is a solid project from Dababy who has been setting the streets on fire. His music just like himself is full of personality. Confidence oozes through the entire body that he blends perfectly with hilarious even sometimes outlandish lyrics.

He keeps it street while not taking himself too seriously. His unique style and sound is someting that will cement himself as an industry stand out. Overall I give the album 8/10.

Baby On Baby is streaming on all platforms.
