Meet The Brimcess
Farrahgamo aka ‘The Brimcess’ has been making waves in North Carolina long before she picked up the mic. The Greenville-born stripper turned rapper has a knack for winding up in controversial situations. In 2019 she went viral for putting hands on another stripper in the dressing room.
The victim apparently failed to show “proper etiquette” while working that night.
That same year she again made noise when she heavily advocated for justice for the late Joshua Brown. If that name rings a bell it should. In 2019 he testified against former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger, who famously shot and killed Botham Jean, a neighbor in his building. Brown was found murdered just 10 days after his testimony. It was highly speculated that he may have been targeted by police in retaliation for his statement at the time but was later deemed a drug deal gone wrong. Apparently, he and the Brimcess shared an intimate relationship that ended sometime before the trial and subsequent murder.
Hot Take
Though we’ve been following Farrahgamo for a while it wasn’t until her displeasure with FuciousTV 2020 list of top 10 NC ‘FEMCEES’ that we began our coverage. The list ranked the top female rappers in North Carolina. Gamo referred to the list as “Cap as hell” after being left off, only giving credit to BIg Mali and her good friend TiaCorine who took second and first respectively.
After re-analyzing her work, views, and followers we had to ask ourselves, “did she deserve a spot?” The fact is you are not going to find many artists, female or male, who put in as much work as she does while simultaneously producing the results that Gamo does.
Brimcess Review – First Impression
Upon seeing the tracklist I was surprised at the number of features. Of the nine tracks, four of them have featured artists. I was pleasantly surprised that TiaCorine made an appearance on the track ‘Real Talk.’
Gamo’s sound is reminiscent of the early 90’s female artists. She boasts a low tone and aggressive lyrics. During my first listen, the tracks ‘How I’m Feeling’ and ‘Goin Blood’ stood out.
‘How I’m Feeling’ is lyrically her best song on the project. She vents the majority of the track, sending shots at friends turned enemies while maintaining that she’s on the up and up.
‘Goin Blood’ she flexes her range by effortlessly freestyling on a New York ‘Pop Smoke’ type beat. It’s two songs later however where you reach the best overall song on the project. ‘No Pain’ is a refreshing change of pace. A well-crafted song, not freestyle, that takes the edge of the album. Great feature selection as Day Brown and SOSO GB both bring their A-game.
Time To Critique
Overall the album could have benefited from a little more diversity. As singles, each song can stand on their own and perform well. On a project, however, it can get repetitive. Lyrically, she’s been pushing herself since she started. As she continues to work and progress her bars will only continue to mature. Her greatest asset right now is her sound. Her 90’s tone takes you back to a time where rap was about bars and not special effects. About really reflecting on life and its hardships. Gamo raps with a ton of pain, and she raps it in a way that makes you pay attention. This isn’t ‘bop’ music, it’s her reach for real rap. A fading art form.
Overall I give it a B-. It’s a project that I will pull 3 or 4 songs from and add to my personal playlists. Her evolution is what most interests me from this project. She’s only been rapping for about a year but shows as much promise as anyone. Her work ethic is phenomenal! She already has the intangibles that make a successful artist. When she starts to push herself out of her comfort zone musically, she’s going to find herself demanding a BIG deal.
